Mark 75 endurance video

Postby FingerlakesKid » Mon Jan 25, 2010 4:32 am

I'm sure that most of you have seen this video about Mercury's famous 50,000 mile endurance test but in case you haven't here's the link. What a great piece of outboard history. http://vimeo.com/5370345 Enjoy! Stan

Note the burnt and blackened driveshaft housing/towers? Interesting. Per "Iron Fist" old Carl cheated like crazy, taking the USAC dupes to supper wile his guys changed out entire power heads. Also noted where, in the second 25K run, they made (unshown) pit stops to "adjust the distributors" (change points?) and regap/ change plugs.

Still, a really neat video! Note that none of the drivers or crewmen wore a life preserver doing those hazardous transfers.

That looks like Bob Walwork eating breakfast and driving some during the second 25000 miles. He ended up building the Raveau boats a little later on. I wonder what ever became of those boats anyway? hmmmm....I'm going to need a new project pretty soon! Long live Mercurys...Long live Raveau! :geek:

I was thinking Quicksilver Engine Cleaner. It was available in the 60's - not sure about in 1957. Great stuff for carbon removal/carb cleaning and after "baptizing a motor"(not that it ever happened to me...) . Too bad they stopped making it

I used Amoco high test in my early outboarding days, from 1960 to 1965.
At the first of this I would have to hitch hike with two 5-gal pails 4-miles & back to pay $.379/gallon ($1.90/pail)
Shell was .299 and .339 in town - I don't the think prices varied at all during that timeframe.
It would be interesting to know what Amoco used for knock-inhibitors at that time.
It was obviosly something a lot more stable than the early lead substitute of the 70s.
I bellieve that Texaco sold a similar product in different parts of th US, but not in Maine.
