“The Antique Outboarder” and the Great Lakes Chapter
“Liquid Assets” are published quarterly containing chapter events,
technical tips, articles of interest, classified ads, and much more. All members receive a membership directory, published annually, that contains the names and addresses of fellow members and the leaders of the various special interest groups. General meetings are scheduled as well as display meets throughout the year by national and local groups for the election of officers, seminars on special interests and swap meets. Also included, as a supplement to the quarterly “Antique Outboarder”, is a newsletter containing national chapter event information and classifieds to complete a full year of mailings from our national group of Antique Outboard Motor Club Inc. Association. Please note: in order to join the “Great Lakes Chapter” of the AOMC, we require that you must be a paid member in good standing with our national club. This guarantees you the benefits of national information and insurance coverage when attending any scheduled event. To join, write to this address:
Antique Outboard Motor Club Inc. Annual Dues $50 (two year membership) or go to http://www.aomci.org/join-renew.htm The Great Lakes Chapter is a non-profit organization chartered by the Antique Outboard Motor Club, Inc. (AOMCI) for the purpose of furthering the interests of antique and classic outboard motor hobbyists in eastern Michigan. Membership dues are $10 per year, paid on a calendar year basis (due each January 1st), and are accepted only if the applicant is an AOMCI member. Although membership is in no way limited by geography, Great Lakes Chapter territory is recognized as that portion of the lower peninsula that is east of US-127 from I-94 up to Grayling and east of I-75 from that point north, and north of I-94 from US-127 to Ann Arbor, east of US-23 from Ann Arbor to the Indiana border, and north of the Michigan-Indiana border from US-23 eastward. Current officers are as follows (feel free to contact any one of them if you have any questions regarding Chapter membership):
The Great Lakes Chapter provides a number of significant
benefits to its membership: 1. Sponsoring
meets scheduled throughout the year at various locations to provide a venue
for: · Swapping and selling of boats, antique and classic outboard motors, and motor parts; · Displaying interesting member motors and providing an award system as an incentive to encourage the display of member motors; · Technical and historical presentations on outboard motors for member education; · Recreational use of antique and classic outboard motors (in season); and · Social interaction between members. 2. Providing a substantive quarterly newsletter which includes such items as a President's message, Editor's message, treasury report, classified ads, feature articles, "Speed Corner" column, and details on up-coming meets; 3. Providing a directory of Chapter members to foster communication and the swapping of restoration expertise. 4. Providing recaps of all meets to the AOMCI magazine, the Antique Outboarder; 5. Providing notification of all Chapter meets in the AOMCI national newsletter and on the AOMCI website ("Up-Coming Events); 6. Maintaining a website to acquaint any interested parties with the Chapter, and maintaining links on the AOMCI website (under "Links" and "Local Chapters") for easy access the Chapter website. From the total membership figure for the AOMCI (something just under 3000), it can be seen that many people are interested in antique and classic outboard motors. Because this "parent" organization does not directly sponsor any events to further these interests, local organizations (chapters) were formed to meet the need to bring members together and further promote this fascinating hobby. Efforts to form a chapter in the Greater Metropolitan Detroit area were initiated in the late 1970s. The actual charter of the Great Lakes Chapter wasn't granted by the AOMCI until the mid-1980s. Given that the mid-western United States is or was the home to so many outboard motor manufacturers and the fact that so many old motors were and can still be found in this area, the Great Lakes Chapter has thrived since its inception. Our current 125+ members come from far beyond the originally intended geographical area. The membership is quite diverse and contains both young and old members with markedly different interests in motor types, brands, and eras and who possess varying degrees of historical knowledge and technical expertise in diagnosing problems and restoring old motors. One of the greatest attributes of the Chapter membership is the willingness to share that knowledge and expertise with others. The Chapter is a very active and friendly organization that warmly welcomes new members and encourages all members and guests to participate in events. Our year-round meets are substantive, our quarterly newsletter is first class, our dues are very affordable, and the social value of our events is priceless. If you think you might have some interest in joining our Chapter, feel free to attend any of our meets and check us out. If you have already done that, feel free to fill out and submit the membership form that can be found elsewhere on this website (instructions for submitting the form are provided). If you have any questions about the Chapter, please contact any one of the above-listed officers. We would be delighted to hear from you and have you become one of our members! |
